The Building Information Model (BIM) is a collaborative process involving the generation and management of an integrated digital representation of a building, a 3D model which is currently widely used by architects and owners to visualize at a glance how the structure is configured and what the properties and performance of a building are. It is mostly deployed during the design phase of new construction projects.

Using BIM to support the retrofitting and renovations of existing buildings is also feasible, in theory, and could contribute to making them more efficient, intelligent and sustainable, but the process is not as clear cut. One major hurdle is that for old structures Information is often only available in documents and paper drawings; costly and time-consuming extra work is required to digitize them.

But, what if we could automatically generate smart digital models of buildings from their 2D drawings?

Your challenge for this DeepHack is to develop a cost-effective tool that, in its MVP version, should reconstruct BIM models in Open BIM format (IFC) from 2D plans in paper or PDF format.
