Clara Neppel

Clara Neppel, Senior Director of the IEEE European office in Vienna joins the Supervisory Board of digital innovation and entrepreneurial education organisation EIT Digital as Independent Member.

Clara Neppel is responsible for the growth of IEEE’s operations and presence in Europe, focusing on the needs of industry, academia, and government. Clara serves as a point of contact for initiatives with regard to technology, engineering and related public policy issues that help implementing IEEE’s continued global commitment to fostering technological innovation for the benefit of humanity.

Clara contributes to issues regarding technology policy of several international organizations, such as the OECD, European Commission and Parliament, the Council of Europe, UNESCO or United Nations. She is involved in efforts related to emerging technologies, entrepreneurship, education, as well as societal implications of technology. As the European head of a neutral and not-for-profit institution, she is dedicated, under a scientific and technological prism, to supporting and advancing human-centric and sustainable innovation.

Dr. Neppel is also member of the Independent Advisory Board, UK RI Centre for Doctoral Training in Accountable, Responsible and Transparent Artificial Intelligence, the Scientific-Industrial Advisory Board of Research Studios Austria Forschungsgesellschaft, as well as, from 2020, of the International Strategy Board of the Software Competence Center Hagenberg.

Clara joined IEEE after many years with the European Patent Office where she was involved in various aspects relating to innovation, intellectual property and public policy in the field of information and communication technologies. She co-authored publications both in the field of patentability of computer implemented inventions as well as possible future scenarios of the intellectual property system.

The Supervisory Board of EIT Digital supports the organisation’s strategic development, executes important control functions and appoints the management. The Board consists of 9 Node Representatives and 4 independent members, including the chairman.
