Hi, I’m Yirui. I'm 25 years old. I'm from China and I'm currently studying at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, France, as a second year Data Science student. I did the first year of my masters at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain. I enjoy traveling, movies and learning about different cultures. I speak Chinese, English and Thai.
Why did you choose the EIT Digital Master School?
I liked the idea of spending my two years of masters study in two different universities and EIT Digital Master School offers a good deal. Apart from technical studies, EIT Digital provides students with a good professional network for entrepreneurship and job opportunities in the field I am most passionate about.
What do you like most about your academic curriculum?
After more than a year of study in the Data Science programme, I am getting more familiar with the data science world. Big data, machine learning, data mining and deep learning courses have given me the chance to explore more aspects of the data world. Both universities offer internships which have helped me to think about how to apply my technical skills in real data processes and business cases.
Was it easy to move to your entry/exit universities?
Moving from one country to another is always the best way to grow as an individual. I moved from China to Spain and now I'm in France. Cultural differences and the language barrier were the main challenges I needed to handle. Both universities helped me with my visa applications, accommodation and banking, which was really helpful and made my first month in each new country much easier.
What is the greatest lesson this academic journey has taught you?
Aside from the technical lessons, I would like to thank EIT Digital for giving us the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship. Before I joined EIT Digital, I had never thought of coming up with my own startup idea and pitching it, and I certainly didn’t expect to be able to come up with this many innovation and entrepreneurship ideas in one year. I have learned a lot about business, marketing, the innovation and entrepreneurship (I&E) classes and the summer school. And now I see more opportunities to apply my technical skills in the real world, maybe even in my own startup.
Do you consider yourself a digital innovator?
Machine and deep learning are building up fast and will have a strong impact on the digital world. I would like to embrace this technological shift and work on its innovation side.
Which advice would you give to future students to be successful and make the best of this EIT Digital experience?
EIT Digital provides you with tons of opportunities related to technical studies, the job market and the startup scene. Joining EIT Digital Master School means you are joining a big family of international digital innovators. Share your ideas and extend your skills in this community and I believe you will obtain a meaningful and unique masters experience.
