University-Specific Language Tests and Exemptions

Aalto University (Aalto)

Entry requirements:

Aalto accepts the following minimum score requirements:

  • TOEFL:
    • iBT (Internet-based Test): 92, and 22 for Writing
    • TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted. TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted.
  • IELTS (Academic IELTS only): overall band score 6.5, with writing section at least 6.0 and no section lower than 5.5 is required. The test result must be valid on the first day of the application period. IELTS Indicator is accepted.
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE A): total 62 and writing section 54
  • Cambridge English Qualification:
    • C1 Advanced (former name Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, CAE): A,B or C
    • C2 Proficiency (former name Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, CPE): A,B,C or Level C1
  • IELTS, TOEFL and PTE results are valid for two years starting from the test date.

If an applicant has taken several language tests, the best official score that is still valid and correctly received by the deadline will be considered in the admissions. 

A proof of English language proficiency is waived for applicants that have:

  • completed a higher education degree instructed in Finnish, Swedish or English at a Finnish university or a university of applied sciences.
  • studied as exchange students at Aalto University (Aalto University transcript of records or certificate of student status is required as proof).
  • earned an English-medium higher education degree in a university or university of applied sciences in an EU/EEA country, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, or the United States while residing in that country.
  • a minimum of one half of the degree must be completed in a country and higher education institution that meets the requirements for exempting the student from taking an English language test. Note this requirement if your degree includes many transfer credits or you have an international double or joint degree. The language of the degree must be stated unambiguously in the degree certificate or its appendix, or in the transcript of records or other official document issued by the awarding institution.

Only transcripts of records and degree certificates (with possible diploma supplements) are accepted for waiving the English test.

Exit requirements:

As an exit university, Aalto University requires no further proof of English proficiency if year 1 of EIT Digital has been successfully completed at a partner university.

Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB)

Entry requirements:

  • Cambridge PET for SCHOOLS (Preliminary English Test) B1, minimum 160 points
  • Cambridge FCE for SCHOOLS (First Certificate in English) B2
  • Cambridge CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) C1
  • Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) C2
  • Cambridge BEC (Business English Certificate) B2, C1

Other tests accepted:

  • English attestation certificates issued by the Department of Specialised Foreign Languages and by the Department of Modern Languages and Business Communication at UBB.
  • English certificates issued by the ALPHA and LINGUA Centres at UBB B2-C1.
  • English attestation certificates issued by universities in the Universitaria Consortium, Cluj Universities Consortium or other consortia where Babeș-Bolyai University or faculties are a member.
  • English attestation certificates issued by foreign universities which have signed a cooperation agreement with Babeș-Bolyai University.
  • Bachelor’s degree issued by a faculty of letters attesting the graduation of a programme in English.
  • Diploma attesting the completion of a full-time degree programme in English at Babeș-Bolyai University, as part of the Universitaria Consortium, the Cluj Universities Consortium, or another consortium of which Babeş-Bolyai University is a member.
  • Higher education degree pursued entirely abroad in English.

Exit requirements:

As an exit university, Babeș-Bolyai University requires no further proof of English proficiency as long as year 1 of EIT Digital has been successfully completed at a partner university.

Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME)

The minimum English language requirement is overall B2 level, which should be proven by either of the following certificates.

  • IELTS overall band score 6 or higher. IELTS Indicator is accepted.
  • TOEFL IBT 80 or higher. TOEFL Home Edition is accepted.
  • TOEFL MyBest Scores are not accepted.
  • Cambridge FCE 162 or higher
  • Pearson PTE 51 or higher
  • TELC B2

A proof of English language proficiency is waived for application that have:

  • complex B2 level language exams accredited in Hungary, or exams/qualifications accredited in Hungary as equivalent to a complex B2 level language exam
  • an official transcript or diploma supplement stating that the student has completed / will complete her/his BSc programme fully in English

Eötvös Lorand University (ELTE)

Entry requirements: 

TOEFL MyBest Scores are accepted.

All state accredited language examinations (according to the CEFR) - minimum requirement: level B2.

A proof of English language proficiency is waived for application that have: 
Bachelor studies conducted in English at an internationally recognized university (language of instruction needs to be mentioned on transcript or diploma supplement) or secondary studies at an internationally recognized secondary education institution (language of instruction needs to be mentioned on high school diploma).

KTH Royal Institute of Technology (KTH)

Entry requirements:

  • TOEFL iBT internet-based: total score of 90 and writing score 20. TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted.
  • TOEFL Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test, total score of 575.
  • TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted.
  • IELTS Academic/IELTS UKVI: An overall score of 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5.
  • IELTS Indicator is not accepted.
  • Cambridge ESOL: Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) Certificate in Advanced English or Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE) (Certificate of Proficiency in English)
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): Minimum score of 90
  • University of Michigan, ECPE (Examination for the certificate of Proficiency in English)
  • Pearson PTE Academic: Score of 62 (writing 61)

A proof of English language proficiency is waived for application that have:

  • English language proficiency equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary school English course B/6
  • Students with 60 ECTS credits (or the equivalent) from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland where the language of instruction of the course was English meet the English requirement. The language of instruction must be clearly stated on official documents. Please note that these credits cannot be from a preparatory programme, or introductory level English courses.
  • Students with the equivalent of 60 ECTS credits from USA, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, or English-speaking parts of Canada meet the English requirement. The language of instruction must be English. Please note that these credits cannot be from a preparatory programme, or introductory level English courses.
  • Students with a 3-year bachelor's degree (equivalent to a Swedish kandidatexamen) from the following countries meet the English requirement: Botswana, Eritrea, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Exit requirements: 

As an exit university, KTH requires no further proof of English proficiency as long as year one of EIT Digital has been successfully completed at a partner university.

Middle East Technical University (METU)

Entry and exit requirements:

- Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-based (TOEFL IBT): 79 

- Pearson Test of English, Academic Version (PTE Academic): 62

- METU English Proficiency Exam (METU EPE): 65

Waivers:

- Students who are nationals of English-speaking countries and graduated from high schools and universities whose medium of instruction is English are not supposed to submit an English proficiency document.

- Candidates registered to a graduate program at METU for at least one semester within the past four semesters as of the date of their application to a graduate program are not required to document their proficiency in English provided that they hold the score determined by the department they are applying to.

Polytechnic University of Milan (POLIMI)

Entry requirements:

Polimi accepts:

  • TOEFL: iBT: 78 total score PBT: 547 total score CBT: 210 total score. TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted.
  • TOEFL ITP Plus for China: 543 total score
  • We have also decided to exceptionally accept the new TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition English certificate. Please check on the TOEFL website if it is offered in your country/current location. TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted.
  • Cambridge certificates:
    • Proficiency (CPE level C2): Grade C
    • Advanced (CAE level C1): Grade C

A proof of English language proficiency is waived for application that have:

English as Bachelor Medium of Instruction: Students who can prove that English was the medium of instruction of their Bachelor's Degree (at least for 3 years) are exempted from providing any English language certification. In this last case, students are required to upload a document certified by the university attesting that their programme was entirely taught in English.

Polytechnic University of Turin (POLITO)

  • TOEFL iBT/Home Edition/Paper edition: total score 72
  • IELTS Academic/General Training/Indicator/Academic online: 5.5

A proof of English language proficiency is waived for applicants that have:

Non-Italian qualification recognized by the Italian Ministry of University and Research as equivalent to the Italian high school diploma (diploma di maturità), or university degree awarded by a school/university in which the medium of instruction is English and issued by USA, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, wherever the school/ university is located.

Non-Italian qualification recognized by the Italian Ministry of University and Research as equivalent to the Italian high school diploma (diploma di maturità), or university degree awarded by a school/university in which the medium of instruction is English, only if based in one of the countries listed in Attachment A.

IB Diploma (International Baccalaureate https://www.ibo.org/programmes/diploma-programme/) only in case the entire path is taught in English, except foreign languages.

Educational qualifications awarded by the European schools included in the Procedures for entry, residency and enrolment of international students and the respective recognition of qualifications, for higher education courses in Italy - Attachment 2*, only if the first language (L1) is English.

Riga Technical University (RTU)

Entry requirements:

  • IELTS Academic: overall score of 5.5
  • TOEFL iBT: total score of 72
  • TOEFL paper-based: total score of 532

  • Pearson PTE: minimum score of 59

A proof of English language proficiency is waived for applicants that have:

  • Citizenship in a country whose official language is English, e.g. USA, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand.
  • A Bachelor’s degree taught in English

Tampere University (TAU)

The Finnish National Certificate of Language Proficiency (Finnish: Yleinen kielitutkinto, YKI-tutkinto) in the English language is a language proficiency test for adults in Finland. If you have taken this test, please upload a copy of your language certificate to your application online.

The results of separate sittings of the language test can be combined.

Tampere University accepts the TOEFL iBT test as well as the TOEFL iBT Home Edition (online version) as evidence of your English language skills. The TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date. Please note, as the TOEFL PBT test is no longer offered, it will not be accepted.

Upload your TOEFL score report to the online application form. TOEFL language tests must be reported to Tampere University with the institutional code 9871. Please make sure you use the correct institutional code. Tampere University will verify the TOEFL results through the online verification system provided by ETS. The scores can be accessed approximately 1-2 weeks after the delivery order has been made.

Tampere University accepts the IELTS Academic as well as the online version of IELTS Academic test as evidence of your English language skills. The scores are valid for two years after the test date. PTE Academic / PTE Academic Online: 62 overall with no section in Communicative Skills below 42

The PTE Academic scores are valid for two years after the test date. Please provide your Score Report Code (SRC) on the application form and upload the PTE certificate to your application online.

C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency
C1 Advanced (previous as CAE):  C
C2 Proficiency (previous as CPE): C1

If you have taken C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency test after 2005, the results can be verified electronically. For verification purposes, you will need to provide your candidate's ID number (e.g. ABC123456) and reference number, and ask Cambridge to share the results with Tampere University. Please give these two codes on your application form and upload a copy of your language certificate to your application online. As older test results cannot be verified electronically, please contact the Tampere University Admissions Office (admissions.tau@tuni.fi) when applying with a C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency taken before 2005.

The Finnish National Certificate of Language Proficiency in English (YKI-tutkinto) Proficiency level 5 on all the subtests (reading, writing, listening and speaking)

Entry requirements:

  • TOEFL iBT: ≥ 72. TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted.
  • Academic IELTS score: ≥ 5.5. IELTS Indicator is accepted.
  • First Certificate in English (FCE)
  • ESCUELAS OFICIALES DE IDIOMAS (only for Spanish students)
    • Plan de estudios 1998 (RD 967/1988): 4º curso superado.
    • Plan de estudios 2006 (RD 1629/2006): certificado nivel avanzado.

Waiving English language requirements:

  • Proof of English may only be waived if a candidate has completed his/her bachelor studies in English. Please note that the transcript of records must include that studies were conducted in English.
  • A nationality from one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK or USA.

Exit requirements:

As an exit university, UPM requires no further proof of English proficiency as long as year one of EIT Digital has been successfully completed at a partner university.

Université Côte d’Azur (UCA)

Entry requirements:

  • CEFR, minimum requirement: level B2
  • IELTS Minimum score 5.5
  • TOEIC: Minimum score of 785 points

Exit requirements: 

As an exit university, UCA requires no further proof of English proficiency as long as year one of EIT Digital has been successfully completed at a partner university.

University of Bologna (UNIBO)

All Applicants must demonstrate an English Language Proficiency no lower than B2 level (according to CEFR - Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) by providing an International Language Certification such as:

  • IELTS: both Academic and General Training are accepted, minimum score 5.5. IELTS Indicator is not accepted.
  • TOEFL iBT: total score 80. TOEFL Home Edition is accepted.
  • PTE Academic: minimum score 51.
  • Trinity College of London (ISE II)
  • Cambridge certificates:
    • First Certificate (Grade B Grade C)
    • Cambridge English Certificate Level B2 (160 – 179)
    • Business Vantage (BEC Vantage)
    • IGCSE English as a Second Language (Grade A*, A, B, C) – all components required: reading, writing, listening, speaking

University of Rennes (UR)

Entry requirements:

  • IELTS: minimum score 5,5
  • TOEFL: minimum score 72. MyBest Scores are accepted.
  • TOEIC: minimum score 785
  • CLES: minimum score B2

A proof of English language proficiency is waived for applicants who have attended at least one year of courses entirely taught in English at high school or university.

Exit requirements: 

As an exit university, UR requires no further proof of English proficiency as long as year one of EIT Digital has been successfully completed at a partner university.

University of Trento (UNITN)

Entry requirements:

IELTS: Overall band score 5.5+ (each skill must be >= 5.5).  IELTS certificates are valid for 2 years from the award date. IELTS Indicator is accepted.
TOEFL iBT Internet-based:  No skill lower than 18 (each skill must be >= 18). TOEFL certificates are valid for 2 years from the award date. TOEFL MyBest Scores are not accepted. TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted.
University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations:  At least level B2.

UNITN accepts any other certificate stating specifically that the level gained is equivalent to a B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). 

All the above-mentioned certificates are accepted only if all the four skills are evaluated.
The expiry date for a certificate is 5 years after the award date. However, if the certificate has a shorter expiry date than 5 years, this shorter expiry date will apply.

 A proof of English language proficiency is waived for applicants who:

  • Are citizens of a country where the official language is English, for example: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada (except Quebec), Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Republic of Ireland, Jamaica, Kiribati, Liberia, Mauritius, Micronesia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States of America, Zambia or Zimbabwe. Applicants must submit a self-certification attesting that they are English native speakers and/or they are citizens of English-speaking country.
  • Have received a degree from a university-level institution where the official teaching language is English. In this case the applicant must submit a declaration issued by the same University stating that English is the official language of the respective programme of degree.

Exit requirements: 

As an exit university, University of Trento requires no further proof of English proficiency as long as year one of EIT Digital has been successfully completed at a partner university.

University of Turku (UTU)

  • TOEFL internet-based test(iBT):  minimum overall score of at least 92 and the writing test score of at least 22
  • PTE (academic) test with a score of at least 62, writing test score of at least 42
  • C2 Proficiency with a minimum score of: Level C1

A proof of English language proficiency is waived for application that have:
A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) or an equivalent degree in an English-language programme from an EU/EEA country or one of the following countries: Australia, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Dominica, Cameroon, Canada, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Dominica, Eswatini, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Kenya, South Africa, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Switzerland, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, Zimbabwe, Zambia.

Secondary education in English in an EU/EEA country, Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, the USA or Switzerland.

University of Twente (UT)

IELTS (academic) certificate, not older than two years, with an overall band score of at least 6.5, and a minimum score on each section of at least 6.0. The IELTS Online test, IELTS Indicator testIELTS One Skill Retake and IELTS General Training are not accepted by the University of Twente.
TOEFL iBT (internet-based) certificate, not older than two years, with an overall score of 90, and a minimum score on each section of at least 21. Please note that the University of Twente does not accept the MyBest scores of the TOEFL test. By exception, you can also take the TOEFL iBT (Special) Home Edition test (only valid for the September 2024 and February 2025 intake). This is only the case when you cannot use a regular language test as listed in this table because the onsite language test centre is closed because of unsafe situations in your country.
Cambridge C1 Advanced, formerly known as; Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) from 2015 onwards (when the subscores were introduced). Obtained an A, B or C grade, with an overall score of at least 176 and a minimum score on each section of at least 169. The Cambridge online test is not accepted by the University of Twente.
Cambridge C2 Proficiency, formerly known as; Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) from 2015 onwards (when the subscores were introduced). Obtained an A, B or C grade, with an overall score of at least 176 and a minimum score on each section of at least 169. The Cambridge online test is not accepted by the University of Twente.


Language test results may not be older than two years on the date of application in the Master School portal.

A proof of English language proficiency is waived for applicants who have:

  • A Dutch VWO level diploma.
  • A relevant bachelor’s degree from an accredited academic institution in the Netherlands
  • A (at least three years) Bachelor’s degree from a University in one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK and USA. When the awarding institution is in one of these countries, but the teaching institution was not, no exemption is granted. The same rule applies to distance (online) education. Canadian degrees need at least 50% English instruction.
  • A (at least three years) Bachelor’s degree from a University in one of the following countries Austria, Belgium, Botswana, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Gambia, Ghana, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Surinam, Sweden, Zambia, Zimbabwe. The language of instruction should be stated on your degree certificate, official final transcript of records or diploma supplement. A statement or a proficiency letter from your university is not sufficient. When the awarding institution is in one of these countries, but the teaching institution was not, no exemption is granted. If the programme was not followed on location, but via distance (online) education, no exemption is granted.
  • Finished their secondary education in an EEA country. In this case, the exemption depends on your country. Check our country list to see if you can be exempted.
